The Doctrine of Al-Azhar is based upon the traditional Sunni beliefs. Al-Azhar will defend it.

The Grand Imam of al Azhar al Sharif Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, declared that the doctrine (Aqidah) of Al-Azhar is based upon the doctrine of Imams al-Ash'ari and Maturidi and on the Fiqh (the jurisprudence) of the four Imams and Sufism (Tasawwuf) of Imam Junaid. The Grand Imam declared that the Salafists are outside of the mainstream Islam and the Kharijites of the modern era.

He warned about a plot to hijack the thought and the moderate approach of Al Azhar, which has been the hallmark of the institution for more than a thousand years.

He criticized the the Salafi attack on shrines of saints, saying that this action violates Islam. He declared that Al-Azhar Al-Sharif will keep the Ash'ari and Matrudi doctrine, conservative Sufi (tasawwuf) thought which properly belongs to dozens of Al-Azhar sheikhs, throughout its history.

This These declarations came in a speech that Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb made during a demonstration in favor Al Azhar's position by students coming from different nationalities of the world yesterday afternoon. The Students held up signssupporting the doctrine of al-Ash'ari and Maturidi, the jurisprudence of the four imams, Tasawwuf of Al- Junied. The demonstrators warned the Grand Imam of the existence of schemes by foreign elements and suspicious funds spent to hijack Al-Azhar and change of identity of the institution. This led the Al-Azhar students to address the issue and expose what they called outsiders of the mainstream Islam. They warned about the pesence of elements within the radical Salafists who may belong to the modern Kharijite doctrine .
